Samsung’s Foundry Clients Shift to TSMC for Chip Production
Several of Samsung’s foundry customers, including DeepX, FuriosaAI, and Mobilint, are reportedly moving to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to enhance chip performance and mitigate risks. DeepX is set to use TSMC’s 12nm process for its new DX-V3 SoC, after relying on Samsung’s 5nm process for previous chips. FuriosaAI, which previously used Samsung’s 14nm process for its first-gen chip, Warboy, may also switch to TSMC’s 5nm process for its next-gen processor, Renegade, expected later this year.
With TSMC’s advanced 2nm technology potentially commanding wafer prices exceeding $30,000, the shift reflects the industry’s confidence in TSMC’s cutting-edge processes. As competition intensifies in the chip-making space, TSMC appears to be positioning itself as the go-to foundry for clients looking for high-performance and next-generation semiconductor technology.
My Take
As customers like DeepX and FuriosaAI move from Samsung to TSMC, TSMC’s technological leadership is becoming more attractive. This could signify a broader industry shift towards foundries offering advanced nodes and stability. This shift indicates that Samsung’s position as a leading foundry may be slipping as customers increasingly turn to TSMC for more reliable and advanced chip production.
