Samsung Foundry, facing stiff competition from TSMC’s 65% market dominance and the rising threat of China’s SMIC, has a two-part plan under its new leader, Han Jin-man. With its 2nm yield reportedly lagging behind TSMC’s 60% test-run yield, Samsung aims to improve its yield to retain clients and increase its competitiveness. Simultaneously, the company seeks to maximize capacity utilization by driving more business in legacy nodes (10nm and above). While Samsung was the first to adopt GAA (Gate-All-Around) transistor technology at 3nm, low demand and yield issues remain significant. It is uncertain whether this ambitious plan can secure Samsung’s position as a stronger TSMC rival and maintain its lead over SMIC.
My Take
Samsung Foundry’s strategy of improving yield and leveraging legacy nodes is logical, but its success will require laser-focused execution. The real differentiator will be whether Samsung can translate these improvements into client trust, especially with next-gen nodes, where TSMC has already set the benchmark.
