As we start 2025, the pace of technological innovation is accelerating, ushering in a transformative era. The current era of technology is unlike any other in history, with advancements like artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, and IoT redefining what’s possible. The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) follows the first three: the age of steam and mechanization, the era of electricity and mass production, and the digital revolution. Others refer to today as the Digital Age, reflecting the ongoing integration of digital technologies, or the Imagination Age, emphasizing creativity and innovation. Each name captures a different perspective on this period of rapid transformation. But which one truly defines the spirit of our time? Will historians remember it as the era when technology blurred the lines between the physical, digital, and biological realms, or will its creative potential earn a different title?
While terms like the Digital Age and Imagination Age highlight important facets of this era, the Fourth Industrial Revolution best captures its breadth and historical significance. It’s also the most widely used term, recognized by global organizations like the World Economic Forum and reflected in government, industry, and academic discourse. Moreover, it fits seamlessly into the widely recognized progression of the first three industrial revolutions, providing historical continuity and framing this era as a similarly transformative milestone.
My Take
What sets 4IR apart is its unprecedented speed, scale, and scope. While the first three revolutions transformed individual sectors like manufacturing or communication over decades, 4IR is projected to impact nearly every industry simultaneously. According to McKinsey, up to 70% of global companies are expected to adopt technologies like AI, IoT, and automation by 2030, potentially contributing $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2035 (PwC). As Sir Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, predicts, artificial intelligence could ‘cure all diseases’ by unlocking new medical breakthroughs and tackling critical issues like climate change within the next decade. Unimaginable change is coming—and it’s closer than we think.
