Nvidia is securing extraordinary amounts of semiconductor manufacturing capacity as it expands its role from designing advanced chips to integrating complete AI computing systems.

Apple built its competitive advantage by integrating hardware, software, and a global manufacturing supply chain. Nvidia is increasingly applying a similar model to AI infrastructure, integrating GPUs, networking, software, and complete AI computing systems while coordinating a vast network of semiconductor suppliers.

THE MANUFACTURING EXPANSION

On October 21, Nvidia announced agreements with major suppliers to expand critical manufacturing capacity, including:

• 30× optical-engine capacity by 2028.
• More than 4× advanced-packaging interposer capacity by 2028.
• 2.5× semiconductor substrate capacity over three years.
• 2× semiconductor testing capacity from 2026 to 2027.

These are planned expansions, not completed increases. Nvidia isn't acquiring these manufacturers. It's using its financial resources, purchasing commitments, and technological leadership to help secure the capacity needed to produce its AI systems.

THE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Like Apple, Nvidia is building a competitive advantage that extends beyond its products to the integration of complete systems and the coordination of a global supplier ecosystem. Competitors must now match not only Nvidia's technology but also the scale and sophistication of its supply chain.

The competition for AI leadership is increasingly about who can integrate complete systems and secure the manufacturing capacity to deliver them.
