The AI infrastructure boom is producing extraordinary results for semiconductor manufacturers. On October 8, TSMC reported that September revenue increased 54.6% year over year. Third-quarter revenue reached approximately $46.7 billion, an increase of 50% compared with the same quarter last year and a new quarterly record. For the first nine months of 2026, revenue increased 41.1%.
THE IMPLICATIONS FOR SEMICONDUCTOR EQUIPMENT
TSMC manufactures advanced chips for Nvidia, AMD, Apple, and other leading technology companies. AI infrastructure investment is a major driver of its growth, particularly demand for advanced manufacturing processes. That growth has important implications for the semiconductor equipment industry, including companies supplying lithography, deposition, etching, inspection, and other manufacturing technologies.
ASML is particularly important because its EUV lithography systems are essential for manufacturing the most advanced chips. Having spent 14 years at ASML, I know that semiconductor manufacturing capacity cannot expand overnight. Equipment production, installation, and qualification require substantial investment and long lead times.
ASML reported second-quarter revenue growth of approximately 21%, considerably below TSMC's recent growth. But semiconductor equipment investment generally precedes the production it enables. TSMC's extraordinary revenue growth today partly reflects manufacturing capacity established through investments made years earlier.
